TENNIS: Dan Evans shrugged off an 88-place world ranking disadvantage to dispatch Jurgen Melzer and book his place in the second round of the Queen’s Club Aegon Championships.

The British number two fired an ace to win the final-set tie-break 7/2 in Kensington on Monday, to edge past Austrian Melzer 6-3, 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/2).

The 24-year-old from Birmingham will now face seventh-seed South African Kevin Anderson in the second round.

CRICKET: Yorkshire were frustrated by rain at Headingley yesterday with less than 10 overs possible on day two of their County Championship Division One match against Nottinghamshire.

The Tykes had dismissed their visitors for 205 on day one and resumed on 52 for two in the morning.

But they could add only 24 to that total before the players were brought off due to bad light.

ATHLETICS: Tom Daley won silver and scored a personal best from the 10 metre platform at the Diving World Series event in Mexico yesterday.

Daley scored 577.20 to finish second behind China’s Qiu Bo, who took gold with 583.95.

Daley praised coach Jane Figueiredo as he posted on Twitter: “SILVER!!! And a new personal best score!! So happy all my hard work is paying off! Massive thanks to my coach Jane :).”

NBA: The Miami Heat bounced back from a loss in Game 1 to tie up the NBA Finals with a 98-96 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 Sunday night.

Lebron James had 35 points and 10 rebounds in a powerful comeback from the cramps that knocked him out of the opener.

James was criticised after the first game but played a key role in the victory.

“My whole focus was how I was going to try to help this team even this up and just try to make some plays,” said James.
