Tories claim: Free market prevented revolution

SOCIAL mobility has prevented a communist revolution taking place in Britain, according to a report by a Thatcherite faction of Tory MPs.

The Free Enterprise Group made the claim in a paper about spreading free-market theory across the world called Bring Down This Wall — a reference to a speech by former US president Ronald Reagan in West Berlin.

It states: “The bloody revolutions which rocked Russia, China, Cuba and other countries in the last century and a number of Middle Eastern countries in the last few years have spectacularly failed to materialise in Great Britain, despite Karl Marx’s expectations to the contrary.

“The big difference between Britain and the countries which saw these revolutions was that there was a greater ability for social mobility in the UK than in those societies which had more ossified social strata.”

The group ignored the lack of social mobility reflected in the fact that the majority of ministers in the first all-Tory government in two decades are either millionaires or went to posh private schools.
