Super League back to normal after Easter

JAMES NALTON reviews the week 10 fixtures

After a gruelling Easter period, round 10 saw the Super League return to something resembling normality with just the one game for each team over the weekend.

The round kicked off on Friday when an impressive hat-trick of tries from Tom Lineham, two of which came from interceptions, saw Hull FC defeat Widnes Vikings by 22 points to eight.

Hull’s other four-pointer came from full-back Jamie Shaul, who continued his impressive start to the season.

Patrick Ah Van’s late consolation try for Widnes also deserves a mention — the winger showed great ball control and agility to touchdown in mid-air before being pushed into touch.

The two Saturday games were fairly one-sided affairs. Warrington amassed 80 points at home to Wakefield, with the visitors unable to muster a single point.

The Wolves gave starts to teenagers Toby King and Declan Patton, with the former crossing for two tries in what wasn’t much more than a gentle run-out for the pair. Full-back Stefan Ratchford kicked 12 goals and scored a try, taking his personal points haul to 28.

The day’s other game saw Castleford defeat Hull KR by a smaller margin but this was another game which was dominated by the home side. The Tigers’ 25-4 win takes them above Rovers in the table to sixth and the home fans will have been pleased with the half-back play from Ben Roberts and Luke Gale.

Leeds travelled to Salford for Sunday’s 1pm kick-off, where two rare tries from prop Jamie Peacock helped the Rhinos to a 28-18 win.

Leeds were clear at the top by six points after their win, thanks to the early kick-off time, but this was short-lived as St Helens secured a narrow 11-8 win in Huddersfield later in the afternoon.

The kicking of Travis Burns earnt the two points for Saints in what was a hard-fought match between the two sides. Burns rounded off the win with a late penalty, after a drop-goal from Luke Walsh had given Saints a 9-8 lead.

Huddersfield rallied late on but were unable to score the all-important second try.

In the final game of the round, Wigan beat Catalans Dragons 34-0 at the Loire Drive, with Dom Manfredi bagging a hat-trick of tries for the Warriors.

Wigan coach Shaun Wane was more pleased with keeping Catalans Dragons scoreless than with the actual 34-0 victory.

He said: “I just wanted us to nil them. That’s what I told them at half-time. I lied to the players I said I would be happy if it stayed at 16-0. I didn’t mean it I wanted to score but the nil I really wanted.”
