Venezuela: Maduro shuts border with Colombia after attack on soldiers

VENEZUELAN President Nicolas Maduro has ordered the closure of the border with Colombia after three soldiers were wounded in a paramilitary ambush on Wednesday.

The two lieutenants and a captain, who were searching for smugglers in Tachira state, were shot at from behind by two men who then fled on motorbikes.

Mr Maduro said the 1,400-mile border would remain closed for at least 72 hours and security forces would leave no stone unturned in the hunt for the culprits.

“It’s outrageous. Everyone should show solidarity with the armed forces, the military personnel who are at the border to defend the homeland,” Mr Maduro told reporters.

“Enough of paramilitary terrorism. It’s time for justice for Tachira.”

On Tuesday Mr Maduro produced video evidence that up to 30 Colombian paramilitary groups were operating in Venezuela, some in collaboration with right-wing parties opposed to his socialist government.
