Yorkshire activists plan miners’ strike commemoration

YORKSHIRE activists who supported the 1984-5 miners’ strike are to stage a 30th anniversary event.

In Leeds, trade unionists and the Labour Party provided practical and political assistance to striking miners and their communities.
Leeds District Labour Party raised £250,000 for the miners.

Support groups sprang up across Leeds district, including in the market town of Otley and neighbouring communities of Guiseley and Yeadon.

On Friday November 14, North West Leeds Labour Party hosts an event marking the 30th anniversary of the strike at Otley Labour Club.

Guest speaker will be Ian Lavery MP, former National Union of Mineworkers president.

As a young miner, Ian was on strike throughout the 1984-5 dispute.

The following day journalist Owen Jones speaks at Otley’s Bridge Church at 10.30am.
