Five MPs injured after fight breaks out over Bill

FIVE Turkish MPs were injured yesterday in a brawl that broke out in parliament.

The fight started after opposition parties submitted motions to hamper the passage of a draconian new Bill restricting the right to protest.

MPs threw chairs and two were hit with the gavel. Two people had to be hospitalised after the ruckus.

Kurdish People’s Democratic Party leader Selahattin Demirtas said: “We will do all in our power to stop the Bill. We will cause a gridlock in parliament that will last for months.”

The Bill expands police rights to use firearms, extends their power to search people and vehicles without court orders and allows them to detain people for up to 48 hours without authorisation from a prosecutor.

Jail sentences of up to four years could be handed to protesters who cover their faces and local governors will gain the power to order arrests independently of the justice system.

Turkish Bar Association head Metin Feyzioglu said: “This is an extremely dangerous development.”
