MPs back recognition of Palestine – Tspiras stalls

GREEK MPs unanimously approved a resolution calling on the government to formally recognise Palestinian statehood yesterday.

However, the vote has no binding effect on the Syriza-led coalition government, which has recently been trying to mend diplomatic fences with Israel.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras refused to say when or if Greece would adopt the resolution.

Mr Tsipras visited Israel last month, meeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, followed by a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.

The unanimous Athens vote was held in the presence of the visiting Palestinian president, who later addressed Parliament.

In the address, he announced that, “regarding a passport under the name Palestine State, we are about to proceed to passport replacement and the issue of a new passport within a year.

“We have already changed all documents issued by ministries and public services to bear the name State of Palestine.”
