Wirral warriors ‘will sack mean McVey’

Merseyside trade unionists launched a campaign yesterday to unseat Tory Employment Minister Esther McVey.

The Wirral West MP has been responsible for imposing benefit sanctions on over a million people and oversaw the closure of Remploy factories.

Sanctions have allowed unemployed people to starve — and in extreme cases take their own lives — simply because they missed job centre appointments.

Now Wirral Trades Union Council is spearheading the Sack Esther McVey campaign to boot her out through the ballot box in May.

“The quality of life of working people, unemployed people and those with disabilities has greatly reduced since this Tory-Liberal coalition took power in 2010,” said Wirral TUC secretary Alec McFadden.

“But benefit sanctions have driven so many people into economic poverty and starvation with many now using foodbanks as a normal way of living.

“In the most extreme cases, people on sanctions have become desperate and this has led to some taking their own lives out of total desperation.”

Wirral TUC is kicking off the campaign with a public meeting on Friday.

It has distributed 15,000 leaflets urging West Wirral voters to oust McVey and produced a “Sack Esther McVey” T-shirt.

Campaign supporters include Disabled People Against the Cuts, Merseyside County TUC, Liverpool Unite Community Branch and Wirral Save Our Services campaign.

Speakers at Friday’s public meeting include Liverpool-born Labour MP John McDonnell.

The meeting is at 7pm at Woodchurch Leisure Centre, Carr Bridge Road, West Wirral.
