Greens condemn SNP for backing arms

SCOTTISH Greens attacked the SNP yesterday over the Scottish government’s support for the arms trade.

Scottish Green Party justice spokesman John Finnie MSP revealed that £18.5 million has been handed out to the arms trade over the last 10 years.

Mr Finnie accused the SNP of “rank hypocrisy” for “condemning the sale of arms from the UK while at the same time handing out millions of pounds of taxpayers money to support that very industry.”

He called on Holyrood to “rethink their approach and invest instead in meaningful, lasting employment” rather than using public funds to support “such an abhorrent trade.”

Mr Finnie said that, instead of “praising bomb-makers,” ministers should “focus efforts on peace and human security.”

The SNP faced criticism last year after then business minister Fergus Ewing underlined government support for arms company Raytheon during a visit to the Glenrothes factory, shortly after the plant was linked to the killing of civilians in Yemen by the Saudi-led invasion coalition.
