Fighting pollution – in the most delightful way

GREENPEACE campaigners launched a Mary Poppins cutout wearing a breathing mask over Parliament yesterday in protest against London air pollution, which has already exceeded EU limits.

The environmental activists called on politicians to clean up the air to protect Londoners’ health, especially that of youngsters.

Brixton Road in Lambeth has claimed the “dubious honour” of being the first air monitoring site to see levels of pollutant nitrogen dioxide exceed the annual hourly limits less than a week into 2017.

EU agreements demand that maximum hourly concentrations of nitrogen dioxide — mostly caused by road traffic and linked to heart and lung problems — are not exceeded for more than 18 hours a year.

The London Air project from King’s College, University of London, showed that the rules had been breached by 9pm on Thursday.

Environmental law firm ClientEarth called on London Mayor Sadiq Khan — who vowed on Friday to deploy the greenest buses on the most polluted roads and to enforce a bigger ultra-low emission zone in 2019 — to deliver his promises immediately
