BIS office closures ‘expose Osborne’s hypocrisy’

DELEGATES to the TUC Yorkshire and Humberside region in Leeds launched a fresh attack on “hypocritical” Chancellor George Osborne yesterday over the Norther Powerhouse project.

Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) delegate Marian Lloyd said that the government’s Business, Innovation and Skills department (BIS) was closing its office in Sheffield and Sheffield’s HM Revenue and Customs office is to close, costing a total of 750 jobs.

The BIS staff are the contact point with steel unions fighting to save their industry, she said.

Ms Lloyd said that PCS is resisting the proposed closures, and conference backed a motion of support for the Keep Sheffield Working campaign.

She said the closures “fly in the face of the Northern Powerhouse rhetoric.

“This government is intent on destroying everything we have built up.

“This government is about driving through a programme of unfettered and unregulated capitalism,” she said.
