Troops fire warning shots at striking dockers in Sri Lanka

SRI LANKAN naval forces fired warning shots at the weekend to break up a protest by striking dockers after they held up a Japanese vessel for four days at the Hambantota southern international port.

Naval spokesman Akram Alavi said that the troops had opened fire because they considered refusal to allow the vehicle carrier Hyperion Highway to leave port an “act of piracy.”

After the navy’s intervention, the ship sailed on towards Oman, its next destination, he said.

Temporary workers went on strike on Tuesday, demanding to be made permanent employees of the state-run Sri Lanka Ports Authority, which manages the island nation’s ports.

Workers fear loss of jobs as the government is planning to transfer a 80 per cent stake in the loss-making port to the China Merchants Ports Holding Company.
