Jobcentre recruits after cuts

IAIN DUNCAN SMITH inflamed the ire of jobcentre staff yesterday after his department announced it’s recruiting 2,800 new staff — less than two months after shedding 3,600.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is advertising 2,289 staff, mainly in administrative grades, with another 600 planned for later in the year.

It is understood they’ll be employed on short, fixed-term contracts.

The DWP got rid of 3,671 mainly admin jobcentre staff at the end of June, claiming they were not needed in those locations.

Civil Service union PCS said many of the new jobs are in similar areas and the work could have been done by existing staff, with minimal retraining and set-up costs.
