Former Guantanamo detainee calls for resettling

A FORMER Guantanamo detainee who was resettled in Uruguay appeared in neighbouring Argentina on Thursday wearing a prison-style orange jumpsuit and asked the country to grant asylum to detainees still held at the US concentration camp.

Abu Wa’el Dhiab said he believed “the Argentine government could receive the Guantanamo prisoners in a humanitarian way.”

Mr Dhiab said he would formally request asylum for other detainees.

During the interview, Mr Dhiab recounted hunger strikes that he participated in and criticised the US for not closing Guantanamo.

While at Guantanamo, Mr Dhiab was at the centre of a battle in US courts over the military use of force-feeding.

When he arrived in Uruguay in December he was weak as a result of hunger strikes.

Since January 2002, when the Guantanamo camp opened, about 620 prisoners have been released or transferred. Around 120 still remain although many have been cleared for release.
