LGBT Conference: ’84 legend backs Corbyn

LEGENDARY campaigner Mike Jackson is supporting Jeremy Corbyn’s bid to become Labour leader, the Morning Star can reveal.

Mr Jackson, a founding member of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, is backing the left candidate to return the party to its “core values.”

He has written an endorsement for Mr Corbyn’s new leadership campaign leaflet highlighting his commitment to LGBT rights.

He says: “I am delighted Jeremy Corbyn is standing for Labour leader as having worked with him over the years I know he has and always will stand up for trade unions, working-class communities, socialism and LGBT rights.”

And having left the Labour Party as a teenager, Mr Jackson is set to sign up as a registered supporter to vote for Mr Corbyn.

Speaking ahead of today’s Pride parade, he said: “I’ve never been much of a party-political animal. It’s just not part of my nature.

“When I was a teenager I was in the Labour Party but when I came out and learnt about politics I left.”

He added: “We’ve all got that perpetual dilemma about ‘do you change a party from the inside or is it impossible?’

“I think with Jeremy standing, it shows that maybe it is possible to change the Labour Party and get it back to its core values of class solidarity and fighting capital.”

But Mr Jackson was clear he won’t waste his energies if Mr Corbyn is not successful.

“I won’t support a party that’s neoliberal and frankly that’s what the Labour Party has been in the last 20-odd years,” he said.
