BP’s shrinking Alaska arm plans to lay off one in six

BP Alaska announced on Monday night that it plans to lay off 275 employees and contractors early next year.

BP’s business in the state has shrunk because of the sale of its interest in four oilfields.

The lay-offs, combined with about 250 people who moved to the new owner, represent about 17 per cent of BP employees and contractors in the state.

BP has 2,725 employees and direct contractors working in the state, of which 2,250 are employees.

The company said it would offer early retirement and severance packages as part of the lay-offs.

But Alaska Governor Sean Parnell said that he was “extremely disappointed” by the planned redundancies, including the impact on affected families.

BP, Exxon and ConocoPhillips had loudly advocated oil-tax cuts approved in 2013 as a way to encourage new investment and additional production.

The state relies heavily on oil revenue to fund government operations.
