Goldsmith’s MP recall Bill loses commons vote

A BILL that would have allowed unhappy constituents to sack rogue MPs was itself given the boot on Monday night by party leaders.

Tory and Labour MPs were given a free vote on Zac Goldsmith’s “real recall” Bill but their front bench teams united with Lib Dem MPs to defeat it by 340 to 166 in a late night vote.

The three parties leaders are instead backing the government’s recall Bill which will gives Parliament’s standards committee the power over recall.

Mr Goldsmith’s proposal would have meant constituents could call a by-election if they collected enough names for their petition.
In a final plea with MPs last night, he said: “What is at stake now is a matter of principle — do we trust our voters to hold us to account or not?”

Left Labour MPs, including John McDonnell and Diane Abbott, spoke and voted in favour of his Bill along with nationalist MPs and Green MP Caroline Lucas.
