Wood to give speech in both Welsh and English

LEANNE Wood will take on a challenge today that no other party leader in Britain has to contend with — delivering a speech in two languages.

As if being blinded by stage lights, the stares of hundreds of expectant delegates and the knowledge that the press is waiting for you to trip up isn’t enough, Plaid Cymru’s leader will also have to switch seamlessly between English and Welsh.

It’s a task Ms Wood, who described herself as “moderately fluent,” has completed twice before as a result of winning the leadership in 2012.

She is likely to start and finish today’s speech in English but address delegates for anywhere up to ten minutes in Welsh in the middle.

Speaking about learning Welsh on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour yesterday, Ms Wood said: “I don’t find it easy, I have to admit.

“But it’s something that I am determined to continue with and something that I find enriches my life.”
