Football: West Brom 0-2 Everton at The Hawthorns

The Toffees secure their first league win of the season as Romelu Lukaku scores just two minutes in, writes SIMON WILLIAMS

Individual errors by Jonas Olsson and Ben Foster proved costly for West Brom as Everton secured their first league win of the season.

Former Baggies loanee Romelu Lukaku struck just two minutes in to the match with a curling effort past Foster after Olsson failed to clear his lines.

The visitors doubled their lead midway through the second-half when Foster allowed a Kevin Mirallas shot to squirm under his outstretched body.

“They know that individual errors have cost them and they know how difficult it is to win Premier League games, without making those mistakes,” said Albion manager Alan Irvine after the game.

“Obviously you’re talking about two international players, two proven Premier League players and they don’t normally make those sorts of mistakes.

“Mistakes happen and we just have to accept that.

“They are devastated at the moment and they will be hurting for the next few days I would expect.”

The final whistle was greeted by boos from the home support as Irvine continues to search for his first win as Albion boss after taking over from Pepe Mel in the summer.

“I understand it, we are all frustrated, we all came here hoping we were going to get a really good performance and a really good result,” said the former Everton youth team coach.

“I can understand the fans being frustrated, disappointed, because that’s how I feel as well and how the players feel.”

For Everton manager Roberto Martinez the clean sheet was “more important than even the result” after conceding 10 goals in their opening three Premier League fixtures.

He said: “We’ve been focusing a lot on what we’ve been doing on the ball and trying to break things down.

“It was vital today that we had that side of the performance right and then on top we didn’t lose what we’re good at and what we are. I think we showed both sides in the performance today.”
