Doncaster agrees to only hire ethical contractors

CONSTRUCTION workers’ union Ucatt signed up another council yesterday in its campaign to force building contractors to meet minimum standards.

Doncaster Council in South Yorkshire is the latest to sign Ucatt’s charter that’s designed to shut out rogue employers who exploit practices such as false self-employment, blacklisting, use of false “umbrella” companies who supply workers and take a cut of their wages, and exploitation of overseas workers by paying wages below national agreements.

Ucatt Yorkshire regional secretary Rob Morris said: “Slowly but surely more councils are signing up to construction charters, which means we will be able to ensure rogue employers are prevented from receiving council work.”

Doncaster is the fourth council to sign the charter after Wakefield, Sheffield and Barnsley.
