Junior doctor rallies the TUC crowd for support

A JUNIOR doctor brought trade unionists in Yorkshire to their feet yesterday when he appealed for solidarity in the doctors’ fight with the government.

Dr Will Sapwell works in a hospital accident and emergency unit in Sheffield in South Yorkshire.

He was speaking as a British Medical Association (BMA) representative at the annual meeting of Yorkshire and Humberside region of the Trade Union Congress in Leeds.

He told the meeting how NHS staff were being driven to exhaustion.

“Every NHS worker is run into the ground, and we have had enough — nurses, doctors, cleaners have all had enough. And it is only going to get worse.”

He said the BMA membership had been a “sleeping giant” which was now waking up, resulting in a 98 per cent ballot in favour of industrial action.

“All we want is fair pay, safe hours, and out of hours cover that recognises that doctors have a family life,” said Mr Sapwell.

He appealed for support on the picket lines when doctors strike again on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

Reality TV star Peter Andre’s junior doctor wife Emily MacDonagh confirmed that she was backing the strike action in an interview with Hello! magazine published today.
