FIRE services in England face another round of savage cuts that will put people at increasing greater risk of injury and death, firefighters warned yesterday.
The government has axed fire authority budgets by 30 per cent — causing the loss of 7,000 front-line firefighters.
Another 20 per cent will be cut from budgets by 2020.
The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) says cuts have already caused longer response times, station closures, loss of fire engines and jobs.
Now Greater Manchester will lose £9.8million, West Midlands £9.6m, West Yorkshire £8m, Devon and Somerset £7.3m, Essex £7m and Kent £6.8m.
FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said: “With implemented and planned cuts to the fire and rescue service now looking likely to be around 50 per cent from 2010 to 2020, the government simply cannot keep denying that public safety is being put at risk.”
He said firefighters “are in no doubt that lives and property are being put at risk.”
