Power station set for closure

A POWER station in Shropshire stopped generating electricity yesterday and will close after 46 years.

Energy privateer E.ON said Ironbridge power station would reach its 20,000-hour limit of generation under a European Union directive aimed at lowering emissions of certain pollutants.

The plant used to be coal-fired but converted to biomass in 2012.

About 130 workers are employed at the site and some will start the decommissioning process, which will take until 2017.

The plant was hit by a fire last year which reduced its capacity.
