350 ikea workers risk losing jobs as Usdaw enters talks

SHOPWORKERS' trade union Usdaw is entering talks with Ikea after the company announced a global restructuring today which could see 350 British workers lose their jobs.

The Swedish home retailer expects 7,500 jobs to be cut across its operations worldwide.

Retail manager for Ikea in Britain and Ireland Javier Quinones said the company had to make difficult decisions as it adapted to a "fast-changing retail environment."

Ikea also said it would create 11,500 new jobs over the next two years through investment in delivery and digital operations.

Usdaw national officer Dave Gill said: "Our priorities are to work closely with Ikea to save as many jobs as possible and avoid any compulsory redundancies.”

The union, he added, was providing members with the support, advice and representation “they require at this time of uncertainty."
