Abbas to be sworn in as head of G77

PALESTINIAN President Mahmoud Abbas is to be sworn in tomorrow as president of United Nations’ largest bloc, the Group of 77 (G77) and China.

The G77 and China is a coalition of 134 developing countries designed to promote its members’ economic and security interests. Though China participates in the coalition, it is not a member.

Palestine’s presidential office announced the move yesterday, saying that Mr Abbas will deliver a speech at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

Mr Abbas is expected to say that the decision marks a “historic incident added to the achievements of the [Palestinian Authority] since it was elected an observer state at the UN in 2012.”

He will also say his election to the presidency “will put Palestinian identity on the map of the international community after colonial powers have long worked to erase it.”
