LABOUR activists have won a vote of no confidence against their MP who has been a long-standing critic of leader Jeremy Corbyn.
Angela Smith is MP for the Sheffield constituency of Penistone and Stocksbridge in South Yorkshire.
The vote was carried 27 to 20 at a meeting on Friday night of the management committee of Ms Smith’s Constituency Labour Party.
The vote of no confidence condemned Ms Smith’s opposition to tighter controls of the controversial fracking gas extraction process in national parks and other protected areas and also her opposition to Labour proposals to take the privatised water industry back into public ownership if the party comes to power.
The motion also mentions that her actions, conduct and words “demonstrate that she no longer represents the views of the CLP.”
As part of her statement responding to the vote, Ms Smith said: “It is frankly astonishing that a cabal of hard-left members has absorbed everyone’s precious time and energy on an inaccurate and divisive motion of no confidence.”
She won online support from some MPs who included Corbyn critics Chukka Umunna, Mary Creagh and Chris Leslie.
