Anti-frackers protest over imprisoning of campaigners

CAMPAIGNERS entered the second day of a “lock-on” at a Lancashire fracking site yesterday in protest at the jailing of four activists.

At Preston Crown Court last week, Judge Robert Altham jailed Richard Roberts and Simon Blevins for 18 months, Rich Loizou for 15 months and Julian Brock received a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, after they were found guilty of “public nuisance” while blockading the Cuadrilla drilling site at Preston New Road, near Blackpool.

They were the first prison sentences to be imposed on anti-fracking activists.

The lock-on protest at the site continued yesterday with two protesters perched on tripods above the heads of police.

Campaigner Alan Todd said the action was “an act of solidarity with the three anti-frackers now beginning their draconian prison sentences.”

A permanent protest camp and daily actions started early last year.
