Turkey Armenian youth urge US university to quit Turkey over genocide

THE University of California was considering a call to divest from all holdings from Turkey yesterday unless it recognises the Armenian genocide.

The Armenian Youth Federation presented its case to the university’s investments subcommittee as part of its grassroots campaign dedicated to justice for the Armenian cause and the Armenian people.

The initiative began in order to connect university students and activists pushing for a boycott of Ankara until reparations are paid and “genocide is no longer a profitable venture.”

At least 1.5 million ethnic Armenians were systematically slaughtered by the Ottoman empire between 1914 and 1923, but Turkey refuses to use the term genocide, preferring the term “events of 1915.”

Campaign spokeswoman Tamar Tatoian said: “It is so important for our students to be educated about these human rights issues, and be knowledgeable about where their money is going and how that may be fuelling denial campaigns. “

The committee is due to announce its decision today.
