GLASGOW CINEMA
Havana Glasgow Film Festival
November 7-11
The focus of this fourth Havana Glasgow Film Festival, with a programme of film, dance, music, social events and discussions across the city, is women behind and in front of the camera.
Its highlights include the British premieres of Vestido de Novia (The Wedding Dress) and El Techo (The Roof, pictured), attended by actor Laura de la Uz and director Patricia Ramos.
Also in the programme are three newly restored documentaries by Cuba’s first female director Sara Gomez. Highly recommended.
EASTBOURNE EXHIBITION
GUSH
Towner Art Gallery
November 10-January 27
Featuring large-scale dynamic sound sculpture, film, wall-based works and a specially commissioned performance, GUSH is a candid and personal exploration by Hannah Perry of mental and emotional health in a hyper-networked society.
At its centre is an immersive 360° film experienced through a VR headset which surrounds viewers with the contorted, continuously shifting movement of bodies, reflecting on the altered states of the self, including the impact trauma and grief can have on our physical and mental states.
Other works in the exhibition explore car modification, with pulsating large-scale audio sculptures and wall-based pieces combining silk- screen printing, digital photographs, car lacquer and painting.
MANCHESTER THEATRE
The Mysteries
Royal Exchange Theatre
Until November 11
“Nothing’s very far away from anything, is it, in this country? Not really?”
That's the question posed in Chris Thorpe’s cycle of six new plays which cross England, from a sheep farm in Eskdale via a tourist information centre in Whitby to Manchester.
From a fort on a hilltop, a landowner’s estate, a tourist information office, a bird sanctuary, a redeveloped factory and a public square, silent and remembering, the plays explore the landscapes that surround us and how we live with each other.
NEWPORT/TOURING DANCE
Tir, Celtic Concerto, Marc Brew
Saturday November 7
This triple bill of new work features some of Wales’s most outstanding artists as the inspiration for a ballet triple bill.
It features Cerys Matthews performing folk songs from her album Tir live, Catrin Finch’s outstanding debut composition for harp and orchestra Celtic Concerto and a brand new work from Marc Brew, one of Britain’s most renowned choreographers.
