Petition to scrap 20mph speed limit becomes largest poll in Senedd history

A PETITION to scrap the Welsh government’s flagship speed limit policy of 20mph today reached over 160,000 signatories, becoming the largest poll in the Senedd’s history.

On Sunday, Wales became the first country in the UK to drop the default speed limit from 30 to 20 miles per hour for residential roads.

Senedd officials said the petition has already become the largest in the body’s history, doubling the previous largest: 67,940 during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Despite thousands of signatories coming from outside Wales, the Senedd’s petitions committee will automatically consider the petition for debate, but only after it closes in March 2024.

The political nature of the opposition to the new speed limit has been marked by Conservative Party attacks from within Wales and Westminster.

Mark Baker set up the petition and his introduction to it reads: “The new 20mph law is coming into force on September 17 and will mark the end of having socialism in power in Wales.”
