MEMBERS of the App Drivers and Couriers Union (ADCU) picketed a “greenwashing” Uber PR event at the Bafta offices in London today to highlight workers’ ongoing legal battle against the company.
The event on sustainability highlighted the company’s claims that it was making it easier for riders to live a “low-emissions lifestyle.”
But ADCU called it “greenwashing” and a distraction from Uber’s “continued brutal exploitation of workers.”
Transport for London recently reported a 9 per cent increase in Uber’s licenced workforce since last September, with the union warning that it means more congestion.
Uber and the ADCU return to court on June 26 for a final judgement in the latter’s longstanding fight to win better rights for drivers, including statutory protections for waiting times.
The ADCU said that this cheats the workforce out of pay for around 40 per cent of their overall working time.
The union has also called out the company for assessing driver operating costs at just 45p per mile in 2021, despite rampant inflation meaning that a more realistic estimation would be between £1 and £1.50.
ADCU general secretary James Farrar, a lead claimant in the case, said it was “infuriating that the company has the gall to pull off a greenwash PR stunt like this in London to launder their reputation.”
He added: “Like Lady Macbeth, the spot on Uber’s reputation can never be removed until the company does the right thing by their workers and obeys the law in full.
“The ADCU will never give up this fight until Uber drivers have their basic rights respected.
“[London Mayor] Sadiq Khan must not be hoodwinked by Uber’s clean-air balderdash.
“Instead, he should insist that Uber obey the law or face losing their licence to operate in London.”
The company has been contacted for comment.
