BAME lawyers call for an end to charter flights

A COALITION of black and ethnic minority lawyers, organisations and community groups have signed an open letter to Home Secretary Sajid Javid demanding he halt future deportation flights.

The Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Lawyers 4 Justice (BAME L4J) group has also called for a National Windrush Day of Action on February 23 demanding justice for victims of the scandal and an urgent reform of the immigration system which treats black British people as “third-class citizens.”

BAME L4J founding member Lee Jasper said the government was racially profiling black people for “unfair and illegal” deportations.

“The Home Secretary knowingly misled the House of Commons when he told MPs that all those on board the Jamaican deportation flight were ‘serious criminals’,” he said.

“That is simply not true and he should be challenged in the House to correct this misinformation and apologise.”

Mr Jasper said the day of action would be the first step for the black community of Britain to come together, demanding an end to the government’s “overtly discriminatory ‘hostile environment’ immigration policy.”
