Beefeaters strike in row over pensions

STAFF at the Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace are to strike today in a dispute over pensions.

Members of the GMB union, including those working as beefeaters at the Tower, will walk out for 24 hours after talks failed to settle the deadlocked row.

Picket lines will be mounted at both sites throughout the day.

The workers are in dispute with Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) over plans to close their final salary pension scheme and replace it with one described by the GMB as inferior.

An improved offer was rejected by the workers.

GMB official Mick Ainsley said: “Our members are disappointed not to have reached an agreement with HRP but their offer was simply not good enough.”
