Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance launches at Cop26

A NEW alliance pushing for a managed phase-out of oil and gas production to align with Paris Agreement goals was launched in Glasgow today.

The Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance (BOGA) was unveiled by Denmark and Costa Rica during the Cop26 climate change conference.

BOGA is an unprecedented alliance of governments committed to deliver a managed and just transition away from oil and gas production.

The event included remarks by the Danish and Costa Rican environment ministers and representatives of other BOGA member states.

The Scottish government is understood to have rejected the chance to join BOGA, despite admitting last week that fossil fuel extraction needs to end.

France, Greenland, Ireland, Quebec, Sweden and Wales joined the alliance as full members, while California and New Zealand will become associate members.

Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative chairwoman Tzeporah Berman said: “By working together, countries can ensure that we plan for a wind-down of production that is fast and fair and that protects workers and their families.”
