Bone-dry Britain faces water shortages as extreme heat continues

PARTS of Britain are facing water shortages and fires as the Met Office’s amber warning for extreme heat comes into force for parts of England and Wales from today until Sunday, with temperatures set to climb to 35°C in some areas.

The warning comes after a long period of low rainfall that has prompted hosepipe bans, wildfires and damage to wildlife.

Bottled water has been supplied to villagers in Oxfordshire by Thames Water after supplies were disrupted due to a “technical issue.”

The water privateer is the latest to signal it will bring in a hosepipe ban, following South East, Southern and Welsh Water.

Crews were called on Tuesday to field fires in Somerset and Wiltshire, the latest in a string of field fires in the West Country.

An alert is also in place from the UK Health Security Agency over concerns that temperatures could harm public health.
