China's Xi says art and culture must serve the people

CHINESE Communist Party general secretary Xi Jinping has called for the strengthening of cultural confidence and reflection on the struggle of the party in the 70 years since the 1949 revolution.

In an article published in the Qiushi Journal, he stressed that writers, artists and theorists should also “stay in step with the times, take a people-centred approach, serve the people with fine works and guide the public with high moral standards.”

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), declared by Mao Zedong after the communists swept to victory in the civil war.

Mr Xi said in the article, entitled A Country, or A Nation, Cannot Be Devoid of Soul, that it was time for artists to reflect on the struggle of the party and the people in the years since the PRC was established.

“All practitioners in culture, literature, art, philosophy and social sciences shoulder the important tasks of enlightening thoughts, nurturing sentiments and warming hearts,” he said.
