Corbyn and Ocasio-Cortez discuss taking on ‘the billionaires, polluters and migrant-baiters’

US socialist activist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has said she had a “lovely and wide-reaching” phone call with Jeremy Corbyn over the weekend.

The newly elected Democratic representative for New York’s 14th district revealed that she had spoken to the Labour leader on Sunday.

They discussed common priorities such as ending tax evasion, investing more in public services and fighting hostility directed at immigrants.

She said that it was an “honour” to talk to Mr Corbyn to “share a great hope in the peace, prosperity and justice that everyday people can create when we uplift one another across class, race, and identity both at home and abroad.”

Mr Corbyn tweeted that he enjoyed hearing how Ms Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has been “challenging the status quo.”

He added: “Let’s build a movement across borders to take on the billionaires, polluters and migrant-baiters, and support a happier, freer and cleaner planet.”
