JEREMY CORBYN hit back at “out of touch” Tory MPs today who had described Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day fundraising appeal as a “TV ad” for Labour.
Former work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith — an architect of the hated universal credit benefit reform scheme — criticised the appeal that was fronted by Sir Lenny Henry on Friday.
Mr Henry said that a “huge number” of people in Britain were going hungry due to food insecurity.
Mr Duncan Smith branded his statement as “complete rubbish” and “socialist nonsense.”
He also said: “That is an absurd exaggeration and clearly should not be used in Comic Relief advertisements.”
Tory MP Nigel Evans said: “This is an advert for Jeremy Corbyn and his brand of politics that will alienate a lot of people.”
Mr Corbyn responded by saying that hunger is the “reality for millions” and that foodbank use has increased under the Tories from 40,000 emergency provisions in 2010 to 1.3 million last year while homelessness has increased by 165 per cent.
He added: “The Conservatives’ attack on Red Nose Day shows just how out of touch they are.”
