Coronavirus Act: Liberty proposes alternative Bill that ‘prioritises support over punishment’

A HUMAN rights group has drafted alternative legislation to the “dangerous” Coronavirus Act that it says would address the “civil rights crisis” caused by the pandemic.

The Coronavirus Act, passed by MPs in March 2020, is up for renewal next month.

Liberty said the justification for the Act’s “blunt, rushed and exceptional powers is increasingly hard to reconcile.”

The group is urging MPs to vote instead for its 80-page Bill, released this week, that “prioritises support over punishment.”

The proposals include measures to scale back police powers, revoke hostile environment policies and bolster workers’ rights so that everyone is entitled to proper sick pay.

Liberty director Gracie Bradley said: “The Coronavirus Act created the biggest threat to civil liberties in a generation, and its renewal last year was the act of a Parliament doubling down on the wrong approach.

“We demand a better way forward: one that provides support for everyone and upholds our rights and freedoms.”
