Council workers in Tower Hamlets to stage three days of strikes

THOUSANDS of council workers in London are to stage three days of strikes in a dispute over contracts, Unison announced yesterday.

Members of the union at Tower Hamlets Council will walk out on July 3, 6 and 7.

Unison said the council planned to sack staff and re-employ them on inferior contracts, leaving up to 4,000 workers potentially worse off.

The council claims its plans will increase annual leave for most staff and increase pay for hard-to-fill posts.

Staff who have worked tirelessly throughout the coronavirus crisis face fears over job security, with severance pay also being cut, said Unison.

Unison official Kerie Anne said: “It’s shocking that a Labour council would resort to sacking and re-engaging staff in order to force through unpopular and unfair contract changes.

“It beggars belief that workers who’ve put their health on the line to deliver critical services throughout the pandemic are being treated in this way.”

A council spokesman said: “We are changing the terms and conditions of our staff as part of the ongoing improvement of Tower Hamlets Council and as a reflection of how the world has changed.”
