‘The best defence for workers during and after this lockdown is trade union membership and effective workplace organisation’

WORKERS should prepare to fight to stop the government and bosses forcing them back to work before it is safe, the Communist Party’s political committee was told during an online meeting on Wednesday evening.

Mollie Brown, a leading campaigner against austerity in north-east England, said the scandal over Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s adviser Dominic Cummings had been recognised as showing that “there’s one set of rules for the rich and powerful and another for the rest of us.”

She said: “The best defence for workers during and after this lockdown is trade union membership and effective workplace organisation.”

And looking ahead to future battles for better pay and conditions, Mollie Brown reminded the party’s political committee of Ewan MacColl’s lyrics about nurses and firefighters in the Thatcher era: “They may be gallant heroes when they’re saving people's lives/ But they’re just a bunch of layabouts when they’re asking for a rise.”
