Crowds gather for Chilean solidarity

SUPPORTERS of the Chile Solidarity Campaign (CSC) gathered in Sheffield on Saturday to protest at mounting repression in the Latin American country.

In the past few weeks, demonstrators have mobilised in Chile’s major towns and cities against US-inspired neoliberal policies which are fuelling grinding poverty.

Chile suffered 17 years of military dictatorship from 1973 to 1990 under General Augusto Pinochet, who seized power in a US-backed coup that overthrew the elected left-wing government of Salvador Allende.

The current government’s effort to crush the protests by force have been likened to the repression of the Pinochet era.

Sheffield CSC’s Susie Plant said: “This is the sixth week of demonstrations in Sheffield in support of Chile.

“Video footage relayed around the world has shown harrowing scenes of brutality. Many on today’s demo wore eye patches to illustrate the horror of rubber bullets, which have caused blindness for some demonstrators.

“Extinction Rebellion activists were also demonstrating and halted their meeting to join the Chilean demonstration.”
