David Lammy appointed ‘ambassador’ of The Big Issue

LABOUR MP David Lammy has been appointed “ambassador” of The Big Issue to help promote the magazine and its work in campaigning against homelessness.

The MP for Tottenham and former shadow justice secretary has campaigned against evictions during the Covid-19 pandemic as well as for measures to prevent a new homelessness crisis.

He revealed that his father was homeless for periods of his life.

Mr Lammy said he was “very pleased” to be appointed by The Big Issue, a publication that he has “written in and bought over many years.”

He also warned of increased evictions while Britain heads out of a recession unless there is “sustained support” from the government.

Last month, Mr Lammy criticised Tory mayor of London candidate Shaun Bailey for his “completely bonkers” suggestion that homeless people can save £5,000 for a deposit on a home.

Lord John Bird, founder of The Big Issue, said it was a “privilege” to have Mr Lammy on board.
