Donald Trump’s Scotland golf resort to go ahead with plans to sack 80 workers and axe wages

BOSSES at Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Ayrshire are pressing ahead with plans to sack 80 workers and axe wages despite “hoovering up” taxpayer-funded furlough grants during the pandemic.

Workers at the course owned by the US president are historically members of rail union RMT due to the former existence of a light railway serving coastal communities in the county.

RMT expressed “outrage” at the resort bosses’ plans, which include cuts to sick pay, working hours, pay enhancements and staff benefits.

General secretary Mick Cash said: “It is shameful that loyal employees are being thrown on the industrial scrapheap despite Trump Turnberry using the government’s furlough scheme, which is designed to prevent redundancies, to hoover up cash.

“It makes a mockery of our government’s job retention scheme. [Prime Minister] Boris Johnson and [Chancellor] Rishi Sunak should be calling the Trump operation to account.

“The gauntlet has been thrown down for the trade union movement in Scotland, the UK and around the globe.”
