East Midlands Railway workers to strike over inferior contracts

WORKERS on East Midlands Railways are to stage eight days of strike action over the imposition of inferior contracts on train conductors.

Rail union RMT said that bosses want to pay new conductors in the first year of the job £5,500 a year less than their colleagues and make them work more hours.

The conductors staged three days of strike action in May and will strike every Sunday from June 27 to August 15.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “RMT has again been left with no choice but to call strike action on East Midlands Railway.

“This is due to East Midlands Railway’s continuing refusal to stop enforcing inferior contracts on some train guards in spite of the strength of feeling from the workforce. The patience of our members has reached its limit.

“The union remains available for talks to resolve this dispute and the lead officer has cleared his diary to discuss all outstanding disputes.”

East Midlands Railway spokesperson said: “We are extremely disappointed the RMT has taken the decision to extend their strikes throughout the summer.

“This action damages our ability to support the East Midlands recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and attract people back to the railway and support public transport as a whole.”
