Easyjet grounds entire fleet

EASYJET has grounded its entire fleet of aircraft due to the coronavirus pandemic, the airline announced yesterday.

The Luton-based carrier said parking all 344 of its planes “removes significant cost” as the aviation industry faces a collapse in demand caused by the Covid-19 outbreak.

The move came as Scottish regional airline Loganair said that it expects to ask the government for a bailout to help it cope with the financial impact of the crisis.

EasyJet insisted that it “maintains a strong balance sheet” and revealed that it is in “ongoing discussions with liquidity providers.”

The airline also announced an agreement with the Unite union on furlough arrangements for cabin crew.

The deal, which comes into force today for a two-month period, means that cabin crew will receive 80 per cent of their average pay through the government’s job retention scheme.
