Two Labour MPs call for The Sun to be banned in Parliament

TWO Liverpool Labour MPs have tabled an early day motion calling for the Sun newspaper to be banned from public spaces in the parliamentary estate.

The motion from Ian Byrne, representing Liverpool West Derby, and Paula Barker, whose constituency is Liverpool Wavertree, attacks the right-wing rag for its coverage of the Hillsborough disaster.

The text notes “with great sadness” the 1989 football stadium crush that unlawfully killed 96 people and that, 30 years on, many retailers in the city still refuse to sell the Sun.

It says that some MPs “are survivors of this disaster or relations of survivors” and request that “the Sun newspaper should not be available for reading in public spaces around the parliamentary estate.”

The motion has gained the support of other Merseyside MPs, including Dan Carden (Liverpool Walton), Kim Johnson (Liverpool Riverside), Mick Whitley (Birkenhead) and Bill Esterson (Sefton Central), as well as Labour Party chairman Ian Lavery (Wansbeck).
