Education workers in prisons and young offender institutions to strike over health and safety

EDUCATION workers in England’s prisons and young-offender institutions are set to strike for three days over Covid-19 health and safety issues.

The University & College Union (UCU) has accused social enterprise Novus of ignoring its members’ concerns over infection risks in 49 prisons and young-offender institutions and of bullying, which it says is part of the prison education management system.

Strikes will take place on April 26, May 11 and 12. UCU said that further industrial action could follow if Novus failed to resolve the dispute.

General secretary Jo Grady accused bosses of “bullying behaviour” and said: “Strike action is never taken lightly, but prison educators will not allow Novus to put their health and safety at risk.

“We have a mandate to take sustained industrial action and Novus needs to urgently address staff health-and-safety concerns if it wants to avoid further disruption.”

Novus was asked to comment.
