Exam board staff to strike on A-level results day, Unison announces

STAFF at exam board AQA are set to take more strike action over pay next week as school pupils across England receive their A-level results, Unison announced today.

The 180 workers, including those in customer services who would normally support young people with their grades, will walk out between August 17 and 21.

The union said the industrial action, which coincides with results day next Thursday, could cause trouble for thousands of teenagers.

This is the “last thing dedicated AQA staff want to do,” Unison stressed, but workers have been “left with no alternative while bosses refuse to budge beyond a pay offer that's substantially below inflation.”

Staff were offered a 3 per cent rise this year, the union said, despite the lowest measure of inflation hitting 9.4 per cent in July.

Unison’s Vicky Knight said: “Disrupting A-level results day is not a decision anyone has taken lightly.

“However, AQA staff have been treated appallingly and only bold action will get their employer to the table.”

The workers, who first walked out for three days last month, are also due to withdraw their labour from this Friday to next Monday.
