Extinction Rebellion protests against Leeds-Bradford Airport expansion

CAMPAIGNERS fighting the expansion of Leeds-Bradford International Airport took over commercial advertising hoardings in and around Leeds yesterday and plastered them with their own messages.

Leeds Extinction Rebellion put up messages including: “In the event of an airport expansion, please put on your mask,” showing an airline stewardess wearing a gas mask.

Another quotes Leeds-Bradford airport’s website, reading: “At Leeds-Bradford Airport, we take our environmental responsibilities seriously” accompanied by an image of an airline pilot in clown makeup.

The airport wants to increase passenger numbers from four million a year to seven million.

Campaigners say that the expansion will neutralise Leeds City Council’s entire carbon reduction plans for a decade.

Leeds City Council is considering the airport’s planning application.

A Leeds Extinction Rebellion statement said: “In taking over these spaces, we’re publicly calling Leeds-Bradford Airport out on its empty words and disregard for human health.

“Leeds especially is already incredibly polluted, and the evidence linking pollution with health problems and early death is robust.”
